Washington stock report after Week 2 preseason win over the Bengals

642 sharesWeek 2 of the preseason is now in the books for the Washington Football Team after their 17-13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
While Washington is unlikely to be celebrating a preseason victory, there were several good things in the game for the Football Team.
The game started slow for Washington with the first-team offense. Ryan Fitzpatrick found Logan Thomas for a big play to get past midfield. However, Washington’s offense stalled, and Fitzpatrick could not get the Football Team on the scoreboard.
So, after Week 2, whose stock is rising? And whose stock is falling?
Here is a stock report for Washington after its win over the Bengals.
STOCK UP: QB Taylor Heinicke
Taylor Heinicke entered the game in the second quarter and completed 11 of 13 passes for 80 yards. Heinicke also made plays with his legs, rushing for 26 yards.
Heinicke can play.
The most important aspect of his play on Friday was he slid and got out of bounds. That’s something he talked about in the offseason, and head coach Ron Rivera praised him after the game.
STOCK DOWN: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
I’m not down on Ryan Fitzpatrick. You shouldn’t be either. Fitzpatrick did some good things on Friday. He connected with Thomas for another big play and found rookie wide receiver Dyami Brown for a 29-yard reception. He threw the ball where only Brown could make a play.
What hurts Fitzpatrick in the stock report is the pass he missed to Adam Humphries in the end zone. Humphries was open for an easy six and Fitzpatrick misfired.
Rivera said after the game that Fitzpatrick “was a little fired up and overshot some throws he’s been making.”
Not a great night for the starting quarterback, but he was far from terrible.
STOCK UP: RB Antonio Gibson
Antonio Gibson ran the ball ran the ball seven times for 28 yards and also caught two passes for 19 yards. On one screen play, Gibson was patient and picked up several yards.
As a runner, Gibson looked ready for the regular season. In the brief time, we saw him on the field, Gibson’s vision and patience seem to have improved from his rookie season.
Gibson is in store for a big year.
STOCK DOWN: Washington's offensive line
I didn’t think Washington’s first-team offensive line was bad, but the group wasn’t blowing Cincinnati off the ball. On multiple occasions in the first half, both Fitzpatrick and Heinicke ran for their lives.
This group needs to show more next week against the Ravens, although it’s unclear how much the starters will play. At right tackle, it looked like Sam Cosmi had another solid performance.
This is a unit where we’ll need to go back and watch the replay. But my initial observation was less than impressive.
I do believe this unit will be a strong point for Washington in 2021.
STOCK UP: RB Jaret Patterson
Another appearance on this list for rookie running back Jaret Patterson. Patterson rushed for 71 yards and finished with 25 receiving yards. He also returned a kickoff 37 yards.
Patterson has so many excellent traits. He runs with such patience, and his vision is terrific. He is making Washington’s roster.
Rivera praised Patterson after the game.
STOCK DOWN: WR Steven Sims Jr.
Steven Sims Jr. is having a good summer for Washington. However, Friday’s game against the Bengals wasn’t a good night. Sims didn’t catch a pass and missed one he should have absolutely caught. When you are battling for a roster spot, you can’t miss those opportunities.
Sims also failed to impress on kick returns.
Sims needs a strong game against the Ravens, but is it already too late?
STOCK UP: WR Antonio Gandy-Golden
Antonio Gandy-Golden led Washington with three receptions for 38 yards. But that’s not why he is on this list.
Gandy-Golden made one play early in the game, where he took a short pass and turned upfield for a solid gain. It was a play the best NFL receivers make.
Then, he hauled in a two-point conversion from Kyle Allen later, when he went up and got the football with ease. Rivera was impressed after the game.
Gandy-Golden can play. But can he make Washington’s 53-man roster? He needs another good week next week.
